Cardiff is a County Council of the City and County of Cardiff. 

Cardiff  is one of five local authorities in the Central South Consortium Joint Education Service.

The school population is by far the largest in Wales, numbering over 50000 pupils. The authority is responsible for a total of 123 schools. 

There are 98 primary schools with an average size of 323 pupils, ranging from the new Welsh medium school of Ysgol Gynraddd Gymraeg Hamadryad with 80 pupils to Whitchurch Primary School with over 650 pupils. 

There are 18 secondary schools, with an average size of 1119, five of which do not have sixth forms.

There are no through schools in Cardiff. 

The authority has responsibility for seven special schools, two of which have post-16 provision.

There are 15 Welsh medium primary schools, plus two dual-stream primary schools in Cardiff. Cardiff has three Welsh medium high schools.
