The City and County of Swansea Council adminstrates the area covering the city of Swansea, the Gower and the surrounding area in south Wales.

Swansea is one of the six authorities in the Education for Regional Working (ERW) Joint Education Service.

Swansea has the third largest school population, numbering just over 34,000 pupils and is responsible for 95 schools. 

There are 79 primary schools with an average size of 260 pupils, ranging from Pengelli Primary school with just over 100 pupils to Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Pontybrenin with nearly 550 pupils. 

There are 14 secondary schools, seven of which have sixth forms. They have an average size of 971 pupils. 

There are no through schools in Swansea.

There are two special schools, both of which have post-16 provision.

There are ten Welsh medium primary schools and two Welsh medium secondary schools.
