Torfaen is a county borough council in south-east Wales, north of Newport and west of Monmouthshire. It includes the towns of Abersychan, Blaenavon, Cwmbran, Pontypool, and Trevethin.

Torfaen is one of the five local authorities in the Education Achievement Service (EAS) for South East Wales.

The school population numbers just over 14,000 and the authority is responsible for 33 schools. 

There are 25 primary schools with an average size of 303 pupils, the third smallest number of schools and the third largest average size. These range from Ponthir Church in Wales Primary School with c.105 pupils to New Inn Primary School with over 570 pupils.

There are six secondary schools with an average size of 1033 pupils. Four of the schools have sixth forms. 

There are no through schools in Torfaen.

There is one special school (Crownbridge near Cwmbran) which has post-16 provision.

There are three Welsh medium primary schools.
